Our National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) Student, Samuel Berry, has been in touch with Professor Denis Ralph to provide tentative dates to speak at one of our upcoming club meetings.
You may recall that Samuel and his family, who live in the Clare area, were exceptionally pleased to have been sponsored and are keen to provide feedback. This is even more appreciated as the family will travel quite some distance to speak with us, a great effort.
I trust that we can arrange a full capacity attendance on the chosen date.
The City of Charles Sturt and partners are excited to introduce the ‘AVOID Frailty and Age Well’ project, aimed at co-designing age-friendly public spaces to support healthy ageing in the community.
The project launch is Thursday 7th March 2024 10am to 12pm at the City of Charles Sturt Civic Centre.
We extend a warm invitation to residents of the City of Charles Sturt aged 60 and older to attend the launch and learn more about the project. The event will provide valuable insights into frailty, citizen science and how collaboration can contribute to the overall well-being of our community.
We want to be able to spread the word to interested residents aged 60+ years of the City of Charles Sturt to attend the launch. It would be highly appreciated if you could please forward the attached poster to anyone from your network at the Rotary Club of West Lakes who might be interested in attending the launch and or participating in the project. Thank you for your commitment to fostering a healthier and more age-friendly community.
Also, we would be very interested in giving a talk about the project to Rotary Club of West Lakes.

My host family's home is less than 2km from the Milan Duomo (Cathedral in the centre of Milan).
My school is Bertarelli Ferraris, also not far.
Twice a week I attend an after school Italian Course with 15 other Rotary Youth Exchange Students, which I really enjoy.
So far, my family has taken me skiing in Piemonte Limone (about a 3 hr drive south west, right on the French border), and have showed me around the incredible city that is Milan.
School in Italy has been interesting so far, as it is different to the Australian school system, but not in a negative way.
In June I will complete a 17 day tour of Europe, and I am also hoping for an opportunity to explore Italy and its incredible history.
I have been here less then a month so far, but I am really looking forward to the next 11!
Come hear a local young lady who has studied her craft in South Australia and after working overseas and has now returned to Adelaide to begin a successful local business.
The breakfast is to be held in The Top Room of the Arkaba hotel, which has recently been renovated.
There is a large free car park next to the hotel and so access is very easy.

The Rotary Community Groups are part of the new governance model being trialled in the Regionalisation Pilot.
Some clubs have asked if this means they should stop other existing collaborations.
The new model does not ask you to cease any partnerships or joint-working arrangements that your club currently enjoys.

The next step is for each Rotary Community Group to hold an establishment meeting.
This will address the leadership and support each group will need, in preparation for the election of their Rotary Community Leader.
We will soon receive details about the establishment meeting for our group, which will be facilitated by a member of the District Leadership Team.
All clubs in each group will be represented in their establishment meeting.
Club representatives are aware of, and authorised to speak on the club’s position in relation to the following questions:
What areas would your club like to work together on with the other clubs in your RCG? (Note: This is a preliminary brainstorm on possible areas to increase community impact, Rotary's profile, and membership attraction/retention. For example, a joint project.)
What sort of leadership and support will our club need? (eg facilitation, project management, club modernisation - anything that would help our club be successful in our growth plan)
What arrangements would work for our club (eg meet in person once or twice a year, then project teams work in between, possibly use online collaboration tool etc. - a wide variety of arrangements is anticipated)
As part of the activities on the day they have suggested making mini wicking beds (see photos below). Could we please start collecting clean 2L milk cartons for this purpose. Visitors can take part in putting one of these together with a seedling inside (e.g. lettuce plant) and take them home from the event.
As a follow on from our recent Club sponsorship of an Outbound Student (Abby O'Brien, now in Italy), we have been asked to consider sponsorship of a reciprocal Inbound Youth Exchange Student.
There is an indication that an Inbound Student could be arriving in Late August 2024.
Given that this can be considered a significant Club Project, our Youth Director Robin will be speaking to this Potential Sponsorship.
Sponsoring an Inbound Student comes with responsibilities and a total club commitment.
Should our club commit to moving forward on the proposal the following are some key points to consider:
Two club positions required: Youth Exchange Officer & Club Counsellor
Club Responsibilities: Arrange (3 or 4) Host Families, (not necessarily Rotarians).
Arrange a variety of administrative schooling requirements.
Costs: Hosting a Rotary Youth Exchange student is considered a Club project and therefore all costs to the Club are project costs.
Costs can include Allowance (minimum of $150/mth), Dinner Fees, Training Weekends, School Fees, Uniforms etc.
Adherence with Rotary RYE “rules”.
From our decision to host until the student completes their exchange with our Club there may be a period of 15 or more months.
The exchange commitment covers more than one Rotary year.
