ShelterBox

ShelterBox advocate and Rotarian Peter Jarvis (RC Berri) gave us a detailed account of ShelterBox.

We had a good rollup of members, and also guest Rotarians from:

- Largs Bay

- Port Adelaide

- West Torrens

Peter gave us an insightful view into ShelterBox:

history, commenced in England as a Rotary Club project, and is now a standalone entity;
current operations in crisis areas
- Ukraine
- Morocco earthquake
- Sudan etc
- Gaza
how the organisation operates.

When a humanitarian crisis evolves, ShelterBox sends in an expert team within a couple of weeks to assess the damage and needs. They have such a good arrangement with Governments that visas and access is typically a mere formality.

They then organise shelter equipment based on the needs assessment, and this is typically sent in pronto with assistance from local and global airline carriers.

The scale of their operations is credible.

As you can imagine, they have a dire need for funds, with a very low overhead.

A collection was taken and $105 raised to donate.

Social night @ SSLSC - 30 April

The Rotary Club of West Lakes is again holding an informal get together with partners/friends (all welcome) at the SSLSC at Point Malcolm.
The Club will be open from 1800, and the bar will be open for purchase of drinks.

This has been confirmed with the SSLSC, and their chef/crew will be available. Please note that they normally don’t do Tuesdays, and as a consequence will be offering a smaller menu:

I trust that this is ok.

I have advised them that we would anticipate 30-40 in attendance.

Please let me know if you CAN or CANNOT attend. This makes it easier for me to understand. I need final numbers by Friday 26 April.

The Function Centre at SSLSC need an idea of meals/final numbers by Friday 26 April so the Chef can order appropriately.

FREDERICK MILLER Community Garden open day - after

FMCG Open Day @21 April 2024

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Open Day on Sunday at the Frederick Miller Community Garden.

Whilst not a lot of members from the public came through we did have Mayor Angela Evans drop by for a chat, as well as Councillor Stuart Ghent (that's not him in the photo, Westy photo-bombed).

Nicole from Bunnings came through as well so she was able to see Bunnings’ donations being well used – their support was amazing.

We were supported also by RC Largs Bay – good to see President Sarah & Ann come along & chip in on the BBQ, with a couple more of their members along for a look.

Photos will circulate thanks to Tracey being the club photographer on the day.

RI Youth Exchange student Abby - 1 April

Ciao Ros & members - Happy Easter or Buona Pasqua as the Italians say!

Sorry for forgetting to email with my activities from last weekend, it was very busy. I was lucky enough to be taken to San Remo by my family. It was fantastic, not super warm yet but the water looked so pretty.

The Sunday was also San Remo in Fiore, the festival to celebrate the beginning of spring. All the floats are designed fully of flowers which is insane to me!

I did lots of exploring over the weekend, walking 23km on Saturday and also riding my bike 10km in the other direction to really see the whole area!

For Easter weekend we get Thursday and Tuesday off school, so my family took us to Tuscany with the caravan to camp.

We went to a few different towns, San Gimignano was my favourite, but we also went to Siena, Arezzo, Certaldo and Chianti!

In each town we visited churches and the Duomos (Italian term for a church with the features of, or having been built to serve as a cathedral, whether or not it currently plays this role), but in San Gimignano we climbed a ‘torre’ 54m tall with 218 steps.

We are currently driving to Pisa! I’ll be sure to put some photos in my next email.

Shelterbags - RC Gawler Light

We received this communication from Richard Tucker of the Rotary Club Gawler Light about the Shelterbag project.

Shelterbags for the Homeless in South Australia Newsletter April 2024

Dear Partner Rotary Clubs,

Good news! The container of 900 Shelterbags from South Africa has arrived in Melbourne where they are being divided between NSW (RC Terrigal), VIC (RC. Mt. Waverley) and SA (Rotary Club Gawler Light). We expect delivery to DIK/RARE warehouse at Edinburgh any day now and will be in contact with you again very soon to arrange collection.

To date we have 20 partner Rotary clubs from District 9510 who have committed to supporting the Shelterbag Project through the purchase of Shelterbags for local distribution or in general support of the project. The final cost of a Shelterbag has worked out at $92.77 each. That’s a bit more than we expected and up from around $80 when we first started our pilot project in Gawler with bags imported 2 years ago! The good news for partner clubs is that the extra donations we received will cover the extra cost above the $90/bag on your invoice.

After a late run of interest from clubs we were able to increase our quota of Shelterbags from 300 to 350 to cover the extra orders and we still have a small number in reserve. It remains to be seen whether we can procure any more bags from interstate during winter but, if so, they will have to be charged at the full price plus any additional transport costs.

We will organise collection days at DIK/RARE in the near future as semi-working bees (with barbeque) for partner clubs to come and roll up their own bags and take them away. Alternative arrangements will be made as necessary.

Shelterbags come flat-packed in shrink wrapped bales of 10 which we will unwrap for checking and stencilling with the District 9510 logo. We recommend that partner clubs add their club’s name and an identification number to aid recovery should they be lost or stolen and found. It will also give you a means of reconciliation with your local community organisation or outreach agency and a reference for them to record the date issued and perhaps some other statistics. We wrote our ours discreetly inside the pocket and at the toe with Texta/paint pen.

As we found with our pilot project in Gawler there are many sensitivities and privacy issues which limit the amount of data that can be divulged to third parties but any information such as age range, gender and anecdotal comments may be valuable for future grant funding and promotion of Shelterbags. In three months, we will send you a request for feedback on how your local distribution is going.

I’d like to share with you the attached article from Gawler’s local newspaper, the Bunyip, which gives a good account of how Gawler’s Red Room Project is benefitting the needs of homeless persons through its collaborative framework. When we first started our Shelterbag Pilot Project the timing was just right for us to fit into this wider alliance of community organisations, which was initiated by Gawler Police and also includes Council and representatives from several government and non-government agencies, who meet regularly to help resolve related issues and facilitate referral pathways.

Finally, I would like to thank all those Rotary clubs and individuals who have supported the Shelterbag Project thus far and for the hospitality you have extended to myself or other members of the Shelterbag team on our visits to your clubs. We wish you all the best in liaising with your local community organisations and the distribution of your Shelterbags.
