Semaphore Surf LifeSaving Club - Making a Difference in Our Community
Two inspiring guest speakers – Chelsea Daughtry, recipient of the Max Christie Award, and Mick Jarvis, recipient of the Brian Page Award, addressed the Club. Both of these awards are funded annually by the RCWL.
Chelsea runs the Seabirds program, supporting nippers who need a little extra help to participate. The program creates a safe and supportive space where children can take part in activities that may otherwise be unavailable to them, while building confidence, skills and friendships and helping every child, including those neurodivergent children, who need to feel included.
Mick trains young people and adults in watercraft safety, including jet skis and other watercraft. He spoke about the challenges of conditions in our local waters and the importance of developing the skills and knowledge needed to stay safe.
We also heard about the important work happening to protect our local coastline and waterways, including the impact of algal blooms and the need to protect seabirds and other wildlife.
As part of our support for the SSLSC program, the Rotary Club of West Lakes is proud to provide a $1000 donation to the awardees to help the club meet needs and may be used to fund-pool to purchase big ticket items that may not be covered through government funding.
