The Rotary Club of Maitland held their long lunch, to support local identity Lisa Hendry in her quest as a Dementia Doula for the Yorke Peninsula.
For those who don't know, a Doula is a support person providing education, compassion and friendship.
Lisa determined that there was a gap in what was being provided in the YP. Typically 2/3 of dementia sufferers are still living in the community.
So she set up a trial in 2023 (Memory Lane Cafe support group) to educate health staff and families, with grants providing initial assistance.
The Cafe travels around the district with a resource library, and reference resources (refer to flyer below).
Rotary teamed with Apex Maitland to hold the sit down lunch in the Arthurton Football Clubrooms, Maitland. About 180-200 attended, mainly from the Yorke Peninsula. There were table prizes, live and silent auctions, with RC Maitland members sourcing prizes from local businesses and families.
At the end of the day, the Rotary and Apex Clubs donated $15,000 to the Memory Lane Cafe project to assist it to continue its work in the YP!
