On the 28 April, the RCWL proudly presented the Gerard Ancone Award, celebrating excellence in vocational education and honouring the legacy of our late founding member and past president, Gerard Ancone. This year’s award was presented to Bek Boyes, recognised as the highest performing student in Cabinet Making and Timber Technology: Certificate III (MSF30322) at TAFE SA (Tonsley campus). The award was formally presented by Cameron Baker, Chair of the South Australian Skills Commission. In his address, Cameron highlighted the State Government’s strong commitment to addressing the growing skills shortage across key industries. He emphasised the increasing demand for skilled professionals such as engineers, cabinet makers, electricians, plumbers and construction workers. Trades are essential to meeting South Australia’s housing and infrastructure targets. Cabinet making, in particular, plays a critical role in the completion of new homes, especially in kitchens and bathrooms, where much of the current industry focus lies. We also heard how the government is working closely with TAFE to support and upskill tradespeople from overseas, many of whom go on to make meaningful contributions both here in Australia and in their home countries. There is also a strong focus on improving conditions for apprentices and trainees, recognising the challenges of lower wages and retention within the trades. Bek’s journey into cabinet making began in 2022, inspired by a desire to upgrade a camper van for family holidays. Since then, she has demonstrated outstanding commitment and passion for her craft. Her mentor and teacher, Kym Kelly, spoke highly of Bek’s many qualities - her dedication, reliability, respect for others and her willingness to share ideas and engage in thoughtful, constructive discussions. Bek consistently showed genuine care and pride in her work. Now, she has come full circle, taking on a mentoring role herself at TAFE to support and inspire other students in achieving their goals.
