On Tuesday 18 August we were delighted to welcome Rebecca Huddy, Principal of Westport Primary School, and Sophie May, Senior Leader, who shared an inspiring presentation titled Glitter and Growth. The presentation explored the importance of getting the balance right between “glitter” - joy, fun and belonging, and “growth” - rigour, learning and achievement.
Rebecca shared the remarkable journey of Westport Primary since she joined the school in 2011.
At the time, enrolments were around 150 students and expectations for the school community were low.
Today, Westport is at capacity with around 500 students, supported by strong staff commitment, data-driven improvement and a clear focus on high expectations. NAPLAN results have improved significantly and are now above national levels.
A particularly powerful message was the school’s commitment to ensuring there is no achievement gap between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students, with the same high expectations for every child.
This is reflected in the school motto:
- Aim High.
- Work Hard.
- Be Kind.
- No Excuses.
We also heard about Westport’s Acknowledgement of Country, which is created anew each year through collaboration between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students – a wonderful example of student voice and belonging.
This year’s Year 6 students are a lively and energetic cohort as they prepare to graduate at the end of the year and we wish them every success for this next chapter.
The RotaryClub of West Lakes are proud to support Westport Primary School through the Dianne Parcell Award, presented annually to two outstanding students. We look forward to continuing this valued association with the school.
