Semaphore SLSC annual awards being held this weekend
This is where members raise a number of topics for discussion in the Club. Over the past 4 weeks we have collected a number of submissions in the Events Folder - thank you to those who have had input. These have been collated into a number of themes, outlined below.
Incoming President Scott will be our Chair to keep discussions on track.
There are about a dozen topics, so realistically we can only spend a max of 4-5 minutes on each.
Resolution may take longer and will have to be done off-line.
Projects
Shade cover for MidCourse Reserve (Barry) Partner with City of Charles Sturt(?) to erect a shade sail over the playground and Path of Memories
Supporting Women and Children in Domestic Violence situations (Rosie) Aligned with "Rotary says No to Domestic Violence". Providing materials and support to those affected by DV, candidates to be vetted by Childrens' Services
Existing Club Projects (Ros, Andrew and others) We have a number of ongoing projects, many of them Fundraisers. We need to determine as a Club which we continue with, those that we are able to support with Club resources, and those that we drop. Carousel, National Railway Museum, Bunnings BBQ on Mondays and occasional weekend Meals On Wheels, Christmas Fun for Kids, Tennyson Dunes Open Day, Frederick Miller Community Garden, Blanket Revolution, Watch House Wardrobe, etc Rotary Youth Exchange, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment, Road Youth Driver Awareness, National Youth Science Forum, Science Experience etc Rotary Foundation, Donations In Kind (RARE), End Polio Now, Interplast, Rotary Overseas Medical Aid, ShelterBox, Disaster support (national and international) etc Local Primary School awards (Dianne Parcell), Semaphore Surf Life Saving Club awards (Brian Page & Max Christie), UniSA Design award (Gerry Ancone) etc Social get togethers, multi Club meetings, Melbourne Cup @ Carousel, Sponsors & partner evenings etc
Donations
Sharing fundraising events with other Clubs (Gary) When we don't have physical resources to undertake fundraising projects, invite/join with other Clubs to spread the load. How do we share the proceeds? Similarly if we work with Community/Non Profit Groups.
A Donation Philosophy (Robin) A set of guidelines of projects/donations that the Club will undertake. What do Members support?
Club issues
Induction/Members kit (various) Improve introduction of new Members, and ensure all appropriate details are provided (for ClubRunner etc). Do we provide Partner badges? What does the Club provide in regard to Club shirt/apron/hat, and what do Members purchase?
Club Constitution/By-Law/Guideline review (Ros) Who is involved, how often, need AGM to approve etc
Guest speakers (various) Who to organise, lots of suggestions but little support in impklementing
Club Secretary position (various) We have had 3 in past 4 years. Is this too onerous, is there enough support/training? Do we have a "rotating" position? Do we get Committees to undertake for each month? Do we need Minutes of each general meeting? What are the key aspects of this position?
Document storage (Robin) Specific email addresses have been set up for positions. How do we arrange for the smooth transition of correspondence/contacts/ideas? ClubRunner provides us with the opportunity to store in a club repository, however what structure and naming convention do we use? Where do we store photos of events, who does it, and who decides what should be included/junked?
Newsletter/Bulletin (Andrew) Is this of use? Very little input provided from Club Members. Who writes stories, decides on input? How long should a story be published? Who should be on the distribution list? How should this dovetail/tie-in with other social media channels (FB, LinkedIn, Instagram etc)?
Meeting format (various) Who manages each meeting, Guest speaker, microphone, meal delivery, set-up/breakdown etc. - a copy of the Chair duties is included with each Newsletter!
Meeting etiquette (various) support those who are doing work introduce yourself to the Guest Speaker don't speak whilst reports are being tabled, Guest Speaker is presenting etc
Dear RCWL members, of our 2 months in Europe we only have 17 days left.
Initially starting in England, we then went to spend 25 days with daughter Jenna in Amsterdam (NL).
Found the 51 stairs up & down to her apartment rather onerous. My knees ache.
There were days when we were drowned rats.
The best method of Transport was using TukTuks which would pick us up from Jenna’s front door. They would take 5min to get to a destination whereas an Uber would take 20min due to one way streets.
Needed to buy a pair of gloves as has been quite cold in the wind.
Visited Tulip Garden, 7 million bulbs.
Attention Westy - Amsterdam how to collect Hardware to build shelves for daughter.
We are currently in the Cotswolds, England near Cheltenham, with my cousin who comes to Australia.
Today Steve rode my cousin’s bike (4 gears) up the hill to a church – he has lots of photos.
It was an adventure.
Stratford-on-Avon bridge built in 1400’s has 14 arches. Still in use today
Robin has set up trial new official Rotary District “Office Holder” email addresses.
The purpose includes a more consistent professional appearance when writing to external parties (asking for Council grants etc). Far better to correspond from an actual Rotary domain address than from a Yahoo or Gmail account.
Additionally, Clubs/Directors retain historical emails with a simple password handover at each year changeover.
Hopefully this will be rolled out to all District Clubs should they see the benefits of the concept.
The intention is that all Club documents will be stored in a Dropbox or similar so that photos etc are not lost as members move on.
Any ideas on this are appreciated - please provide feedback to Robin.
Ciao Ros & members - my phone has been playing up, so sorry about delays in writing.
My Italian is definitely getting better, every day I feel like I learn a bit more.
This weekend we went to Venice which was super cool, we saw Murano (the glass island), the bridge of sighs and the outside of St Marks Basilica. I really enjoyed the trip, and the other students did too.
I also have now played 2 volleyball games but unfortunately we have lost them both.
My school also visited last week and I had the opportunity to go to lake Como with them which was fantastic.
I also went to an American football game last week with the Americans which was interesting. It was two Italian teams playing each other, and they weren’t fantastic but it was still very cool.
Thanks to the Club members for their postcards. Here are a few back!
We received this communication from Richard Tucker of the Rotary Club Gawler Light about the Shelterbag project.
Shelterbags for the Homeless in South Australia Newsletter April 2024
Dear Partner Rotary Clubs,
Good news! The container of 900 Shelterbags from South Africa has arrived in Melbourne where they are being divided between NSW (RC Terrigal), VIC (RC. Mt. Waverley) and SA (Rotary Club Gawler Light). We expect delivery to DIK/RARE warehouse at Edinburgh any day now and will be in contact with you again very soon to arrange collection.
To date we have 20 partner Rotary clubs from District 9510 who have committed to supporting the Shelterbag Project through the purchase of Shelterbags for local distribution or in general support of the project. The final cost of a Shelterbag has worked out at $92.77 each. That’s a bit more than we expected and up from around $80 when we first started our pilot project in Gawler with bags imported 2 years ago! The good news for partner clubs is that the extra donations we received will cover the extra cost above the $90/bag on your invoice.
After a late run of interest from clubs we were able to increase our quota of Shelterbags from 300 to 350 to cover the extra orders and we still have a small number in reserve. It remains to be seen whether we can procure any more bags from interstate during winter but, if so, they will have to be charged at the full price plus any additional transport costs.
We will organise collection days at DIK/RARE in the near future as semi-working bees (with barbeque) for partner clubs to come and roll up their own bags and take them away. Alternative arrangements will be made as necessary.
Shelterbags come flat-packed in shrink wrapped bales of 10 which we will unwrap for checking and stencilling with the District 9510 logo. We recommend that partner clubs add their club’s name and an identification number to aid recovery should they be lost or stolen and found. It will also give you a means of reconciliation with your local community organisation or outreach agency and a reference for them to record the date issued and perhaps some other statistics. We wrote our ours discreetly inside the pocket and at the toe with Texta/paint pen.
As we found with our pilot project in Gawler there are many sensitivities and privacy issues which limit the amount of data that can be divulged to third parties but any information such as age range, gender and anecdotal comments may be valuable for future grant funding and promotion of Shelterbags. In three months, we will send you a request for feedback on how your local distribution is going.
I’d like to share with you the attached article from Gawler’s local newspaper, the Bunyip, which gives a good account of how Gawler’s Red Room Project is benefitting the needs of homeless persons through its collaborative framework. When we first started our Shelterbag Pilot Project the timing was just right for us to fit into this wider alliance of community organisations, which was initiated by Gawler Police and also includes Council and representatives from several government and non-government agencies, who meet regularly to help resolve related issues and facilitate referral pathways.
Finally, I would like to thank all those Rotary clubs and individuals who have supported the Shelterbag Project thus far and for the hospitality you have extended to myself or other members of the Shelterbag team on our visits to your clubs. We wish you all the best in liaising with your local community organisations and the distribution of your Shelterbags.
The QR code will take you to our website! You will see latest stories and photos from member activities.
